VOLUME BALANCE CONTROL FOR YOUR MUSIC SYNTHESIZER
The following simple instructions will help you to set the voices of your
synthesizer for proper volume balance. This will allow the richest possible
chords, without any loss of fullness.
1. Set up the Music Synthesizer as described on pages 1 through 3 of the
instructions included with the unit.
2. Set the volume control of your television at a low level. While holding
down any three keys on the Music Synthesizer, turn up the volume to the
desired level.
3. Keep the three notes pressed down and add a fourth note (using one hand).
Then, using the Balance Control located on the right front of the Computer
Adaptor, under the hinged cover, adjust the volume of the fourth note you have
just added, so that it is equal in volume to the first three.
(To get the best possible balance, it might be helpful to set the volume of
the fourth note a little too high, and then bring it down to where you want
it. This avoids "undershoot.")
ALTERNATELY: You may prefer to use the method of volume balance control
described on page 10 of the Computer Module Owner's Guide. Either method will
correctly set the volume balance. Once set, the control should need no
further adjustment.

----- INTRODUCTION -----
The Music Synthesizer is a 49-key, 4-octave, 6-note polyphonic music keyboard
that you can easily plug into your Intellivision@ Computer Adaptor for
learning and playing music with astounding flexibility and lots of fun. It
looks, feels, and plays like a regular piano or organ, but with the added
attraction of providing instant TV screen, color-coded, sound graphics while
composing or playing music.
In its expanded form, the Music Synthesizer can offer you (and your entire
family) an amazing range and variety of music-learning and music-playing
experiences. Just snap individual music software cartridges (sold separately)
into your Computer Adaptor's cartridge port!
In addition, your "live" session of exciting music can be recorded on your
cassette for future playback or editing by initially plugging your cassette
recorder into your Computer Adaptor and pressing the appropriate recorder
buttons!
----- BASIC HOOK-UP -----
Normally, you will simply add the Music Synthesizer to your color TV set,
Master Component, and Computer Adaptor. Attached to the Music Synthesizer is
a cord ending in a custom connector. Plug this connector into the Computer
Adaptor, as illustrated.

- Press only one key at a time. Hand controllers are used to change the
octave range or the pitch (details below).
----- HOW TO BEGIN -----
Press [RESET] on Master Component.
Press [DISC] on a hand controller and watch the following display:
[Illustration of the ECS main menu. The following text appears:
"1. BASIC
2. CARTRIDGE
3. MUSIC"
and the selection pointer is on the third line.]
Press Key [3] on hand controller to select "MUSIC", then press [ENTER]
You can now use the Music Synthesizer just like an organ keyboard! Set the
volume on your TV and the sound will be just like an organ sound!
Before you start playing, the screen will show two musical shafts without
notes on a tan background. When playing, and anytime after, the screen will
display exciting, coordinated graphics consisting of blue, dancing notes on
the musical shafts.
Notes appear on the screen one after another as they are played, occupying
assigned positions. Playing notes left to right on the keyboard (going up in
pitch), will show an ascending pattern of corresponding notes on the screen.
Playing notes right to left on the keyboard (going down in pitch), will show a
descending pattern of corresponding notes on the screen.
----- CHANGING OCTAVES -----
Although the keyboard can play only 4 octaves at a time, the Music Synthesizer
can cover an 8 octave range by moving the pitch of the keyboard up or down in
1-octave steps. Set the keyboard range before playing:
- To move the pitch DOWN 1 octave, press key [6] on hand controller. Keep
pressing samy key to go still lower in octaves. From the initial keyboard
position you can go down only 1 octave.
- To move the pitch UP 1 octave, press key [4] on hand controller. Keep
pressing same key to go still higher in octaves. From the initial keyboard
position you can go up 3 octaves.
- To CLEAR, press [DISC]. Your keyboard setting will return to its initial
position.

----- CHANGING NOTES -----
Within its 4-octave range, the Music Synthesizer allows for 49 possible
playing notes or keys -- just like on an organ keyboard. The pitch can be
moved up or down in 1-note steps. Set the pitch range before playing:
- To move pitch UP 1 note, press key [1] on hand controller. Keep pressing
same key to go still higher in notes.
- To move pitch DOWN 1 note, press key [3] on hand controller. Keep pressing
same key to go still lower in notes.
- To CLEAR, press [DISC]. Your keyboard setting will return to its initial
position.
NOTE: Since 1 octave is equal to 12 notes, the effect of moving the pitch up
or down 1 note at a time is similar, and therefore need not be illustrated.
----- MUSIC SOFTWARE CARTRIDGES -----
The Computer Adaptor can accept a wide range of software program cartridges to
expand the Music Synthesizer's sophistocation and excitement!
For example, a cartridge may teach you a fun, new way to learn your favorite
song. Musical notes will fall from the sky in the pattern of a popular song,
and you will be required to shoot the notes down... at faster speed, for
faster learning! Another cartridge will teach you music theory. Still
another cartridge will make a music composer out of you... and let you create
your own songs!
Just plug your new software cartridge into your Computer Adaptor's cartridge
port and find out what the latest in electronic graphics and sounds can do for
you!
